A few days ago, a customer reached out to us at HomeFix Appliance Repair in Houston for help with her 17-year-old KitchenAid undercounter icemaker. It had recently stopped working after she cleaned it manually. Before that, it had been running just fine. So naturally, she wanted to know: is this a simple fix—or is it time to let go?
We inspected the unit and discovered multiple problems. That’s when we had to have the real conversation: Is KitchenAid icemaker repair worth it, or does replacement make more sense?
What We Found Inside the Icemaker
1. Smart Water Valve Failure
The water inlet valve—specifically the smart valve—wasn’t working at all. No water could flow to the evaporator slab.
2. Leak in the Sealed System
The real issue, though, was a refrigerant leak in the sealed system. After pressure testing, we found the leak in the evaporator—the part where ice is actually formed. That component is not repairable.
3. The Cost of Repair vs Replacement
Replacing the evaporator and valve would cost over $1,000. A new KitchenAid icemaker with a drain pump? Around $2,500. With so many other worn parts, continuing with repair just didn’t make sense.
Why We Recommended Replacing the Unit
1. Calcium Buildup and Clogged Tubes
The unit showed major signs of neglect:
- Water tubing was blocked by scale
- Circulation pump was noisy and worn
- Calcium buildup coated the bin and reservoir
- Condenser coil was choked with dust
We’ve attached a photo showing just how dirty the coil was. This kind of blockage affects how fast the unit freezes water and produces ice.
2. No Water Filtration
There was no inline water filter connected—something every KitchenAid icemaker owner should install. Without it, minerals from city water can wreak havoc on the sealed system and ice bin.
How to Extend the Life of Your KitchenAid Icemaker
If you’re investing in a premium appliance like this, you need to commit to proper icemaker maintenance.
✔ Install a Water Filter
Use a refrigerator-style inline water filter. Replace it every 6 months.
✔ Perform Regular Descaling
Run a chemical descaling cycle every 6 months, or let our team do it as part of a maintenance plan.
✔ Shut Down Properly When Not in Use
If leaving town or pausing use:
- Run a cleaning cycle
- Shut off water
- Drain all water lines
- Unplug the icemaker
✔ Avoid Abrasive Cleaning
Never scrub the evaporator or internal parts with steel wool or rough sponges. You could puncture the sealed system and cause a refrigerant leak.
